Normally in so many state & country the electricity is generated and transmitted through a 3 wire system, which is also called balanced type supply systems. The load consists of both 1 phase equipment and 3 phase equipments which needs to be run on this 3 wire balanced system, so to facilitate the same, Delta / Star configuration transformer is used at last point of distribution network. By using the same, the 3 wire system gets converted into a 3 Phase, 4 wire system. It is a proven fact that the electricity supply is not stable in most parts of the world because of which we are compelled to use additional devices such as industrial automatic voltage regulator for overcoming the short falls in electricity supply. The industrial automatic voltage regulator is made both in 1 phase or 3 phase arrangements.

Types of Automatic Voltage Regulators and AVR ?
UNBALANCED TYPE AVR: Widely accepted design to suit various conditions. All the phases are independently sensed & corrected. Its is a combination of 3 single phase units combined together. Suitable for both balanced / unbalanced loading & incoming voltage. So in case the load is combination of 3 Phase & 1 Phase nature or totally single phase then only unbalanced type Automatic Voltage Regulators and AVR is recommended. Unbalance type automatic voltage regulators are widely used and recommended for most application and industry.
BALANCED TYPE AVR: One phase (master) sensed & all the 3 corrected in accordance to the master phase. Suitable for balanced loading & balanced incoming voltage only. So in case all the load is of 3 Phase nature then balanced type Automatic Voltage Regulators and AVR are to be used.

Some thumb rule conversions factors for choosing the right KVA of the Automatic Voltage Regulators.
a. KVA of Stabilizer = H.P. of lift * 3
b. KVA of Stabilizer = Tonnage of A.C. plant * 2
c. KVA of Stabilizer = H.P. for Resistive loads
d. KVA of Stabilizer = H.P. or K.W./ Power factor for Reactive loads.
